Tajikistan ♦ PAMIR-HIGHWAY

1st and 2nd Day   Flight via Istanbul and Arrival in Osh

After a comfortable flight via Istanbul we land at the Airport 10 minutes outside of Osh, the second largest city of Kyrgyzstan. We will be transferred to the hotel, where we can get some rest for a few hours. After a delicious lunch we familiarize ourselves with the bikes on a short trip outside the city. We stay in Osh.

Day 3   Day trip to Papansee and pass road (approximately 150 km)

Today‘s day trip takes up to Papansee, the water reservoir of Osh. On unpaved dirt roads we drive South of the city by a green valley and then through one of the many passes. We make use of the good Chinese- Tajik road to head back in the afternoon. We stay in Osh.

Day 4   Kyrgyz Ferghana Valley to Khujand in Tajikistan

Today‘s ride West is long and dusty. We will be rewarded with many new impressions that will make us forget all the effort. We’ll enjoy the beer all the more for it when we reach our beautiful hotel.

Day 5   Anzob Pass to Dushanbe

Today we have a geographical treat. While our support vehicle takes the main road to Dushanbe through the dreaded Anzob Tunnel, we traverse a 3300m jaw-dropper. Since all traffic goes through the fume-filled and flooded tunnels, we have the impressive pass all to ourselves. We stay in Dushanbe.

Day 6   The route to Khorog and the start of the Pamirs

There are two ways to get to Khorog: Either on the winter route through the South of Tajikistan or by the M41 through the mountains, over rough roads, some of which are interrupted by watercourses. We choose the second option: more challenging, but definitely more sexy.

Day 7   Kalaikhum

We break the journey to Khorog with a stay in a welcoming homestay in Kalaikhum. We have the opportunity of an insight into the everyday life of a Tajik family and to experience their generous hospitality.

Day 8   The Wakhan Valley and Bibi Fatima Hot Springs

The Wakhan Valley on the border with Afghanistan is inhabited by a separate ethnic group. These people differ to the surrounding Tajiks not only in their language, but also in their appearance and culture. The wide valley offers views South to the nearby Hindu Kush range in Pakistan and of the Tajik mountain peaks of Karl Marx Peak and Pik Engels. This really is a sight to behold. We take a welcome break from the road with a visit to the Bibi Fatima Hot Springs. Here we can relax, take a hot bath (over 40°C) in the cave and enjoy the magnificent view of the Wakhan Valley. We stay at Bibi Fatima.

Day 9   Ride up to the Pamir Plateau at over 4000m

On the way to the Pamir Plateau the air is getting thinner and the view clearer. Besides wild camels, yaks and a few shepherds we are alone in this solitude. We stay in a homestay on Lake Bulunkur and have enough time to visit other hot springs and a „mini-geyser“.

Day 10 an 11   The Pamir Highway

We are now back on the legendary Pamir Highway or the M41. The road was still being developed by the Soviets when they left in 1991 in order to bolster their presence along the Afghan and Chinese borders. Today it is still used by Chinese transport vehicles. We cross four passes in excess of 4000m. The imposing Ak Baital at 4655m is the highest. In Murghab, the highest town of the former Soviet Union, we again get the chance to enjoy hot springs and a hotel where we can take a long relaxing shower.

Day 12 and 13   Karakul Lake and the Kyzyl Art Pass to Kyrgyzstan

Our journey takes us to the beautiful town of Karakul lake. We stay right on the lake in Karakul. The next day we cross our last pass, the Kyzyl Art at 4200m. Here we reach the border with Kyrgyzstan.

Day 14    Base Camp of Peak Lenin and return to Osh

Before heading back to Osh, we make a detour to the base camp of Peak Lenin at over 3500m and enjoy, weather permitting, a fantastic view of the mountain giants.

Day 15 and 15   Osh and Departure

Changes are possible!
