Kyrgyzstan ► Mongolia ♦ OSH - KASHGAR - URUMQI - ULAANBAATAR
EXCLUSIVE MOTORBIKE RIDE ACROSS MONGOLIA
from Kyrgyzstan across the Chinese province of Xinjiang to Ulaanbaatar
ITINERARY
Days 1 & 2 Arrival, test drive
Very early in the morning we land in Osh, the second largest city of Kyrgyzstan. We are met at the airport, then onto the hotel for a few hours’ rest. After lunch, we familiarise ourselves with the bikes on a brief tour outside the city. We stay in Osh.
Day 3 To Sary-Tash
We begin our journey along the Pamir Highway (M41) with a drive to Sary-Tash. Weather permitting, we’ll take a dirt road up to the foot of the 7134m Pik Lenin - right on the border with Tajikistan.
Day 4 From Sary-Tash to Kashgar
Today, the border crossing into China’s Xinjiang province is on the agenda. This is situated at just over 3000m in the midst of the stunning Pamir Mountains. In the late afternoon we reach Kashgar, the former Silk Road city and commercial city. Our hotel is situated right in the city center, next to the well-preserved old town, surrounded by the huddle and bussle of the Uighur people’s crafts and trades.
Day 5 Kashgar
Before continuing our journey into the Taklamakan Desert, we need half a day, for the Chinese vehicle control to check the bikes. The rest of the day is at our disposal.
Day 6 Kashgar to Aksu
The brand-new highway leads us - wedged between the desert in the South and the mighty Tien Shan Mountains in the North - to Aksu. Like many cities in Xinjiang, Aksu was built for the future. The countless vacant apartment blocks resemble a ghost town.
Day 7 Continue to Saaryn Shan
Today we leave the highway and drive through a beautiful valley and later on a winding road through the middle of the Saaryn Shan Mountains. We spend the night in tents under a starry sky.
Day 8 Saaryn Shan to Urumqi
The road to Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang province, leads us up through the mountains and over a 4000m pass, into the not particularly attractive metropolis.
Day 9 Onwards towards Fuyun
Northward our journey goes through a spur of the mighty Gobi Desert. We get to set up our camp for another night under the stars and enjoy the peace and quiet of the desert.
Day 10 Crossing the border to Mongolia
Today we say goodbye to our Chinese companion who who has accompanied us over the last few days through Xinjiang, as we cross the border into Mongolia.
Days 11 to 20 Through Mongolia to Ulaanbaatar
Over the next 10 days, we cross a large part of the vast deserted country from West to East. Our goal is Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. On the way we ride through wonderfully unspoiled landscapes: from vast steppes to lonely canyons, interspersed again and again with remote Buddhist monasteries. We experience both dry sections as well as beautiful seascapes of the desert, where, if possible, we set up camp and while away the evenings in front of a cozy campfire. The slopes are varied from rocky to sandy and when it rains to mushy mud. The average daily mileage is less than 150 km which allows us to stop and explore some of the historical sites and monasteries. Only about 200 km before Ulaanbaatar do we return to a paved road.
Days 21 & 22 Ulaanbaatar and Return
On our last day in Mongolia we take time to look around Ulaanbaatar and celebrate the end of our epic adventure with a delicious dinner. Our flight home leaves the next day.
